             CALLING ALL ROCKHOUNDS!
"
And they ran uphill and down dale, knapping the chunky stones to pieces with hammers, like so many road makers gone daft.  They say, it is to see how the world was made."

Sir Walter Scott        1828

The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society began with  an interest and desire to educate the public about  fossils, rocks, and minerals in the  Wise County area.  James H Archer, a retired petroleum geologist from Decatur,  called  for the first organizational meeting  on March 4,  2002,  at the John and Kathryn Jackson Public Library in Decatur, Texas.   Thirty-five  people attended the meeting, indicating a strong interest in the earth related subjects.

The purpose of the meeting was to organize people from Wise County and the surrounding area who are interested fossils, rocks, minerals, the lapidary arts,  and earth sciences.

There are 44 rock, gem, and mineral societies in the state  of Texas .There are seven regional districts, or federations of gem and mineral societies in the United States.  The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies is composed of seven regional federations: California, Northwest, South Central, Southeast, Midwest, Rocky Mountain, and Eastern. The South Central Federation is composed of the states of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.  The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society is a member of the South Central Federation of Mineralogical Societies, and American Federation Of Mineralogical Societies. The  Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society  serves  to educate and further interest in the geological sciences and the lapidary arts.  We follow the AFMS Code Of Ethics in order to be good stewards of our earth.

The meetings are held every third Tuesday evening of each month [excepting March & July] at 6:30 p.m. at the  First United Methodist Church, Wesley Center Bldg, 200 East Main St., Decatur, Tx. 76234.
